    Microsoft Surface Go 10" Wi-Fi 64GB - Silver (MHN-00001)

    Great compact all purpose computer
The Surface Go is a great little computer. I use it for everything from online business to programming. The size is just right - fits nicely into my bicycle bag and goes everywhere with me. Battery life is good. Build quality is excellent - the metal alloy case is rugged, smooth, and has a solid feel. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass which is very tough and is scratch resistant. Mine was a bundle and came with the optional keyboard cover. I find the keyboard to be very nice with good tactile feedback, and the keys are well placed. Backlighting is a bonus for use in dim areas. But the cool thing is that you don't really need the optional surface go keyboard because this computer also has Bluetooth and so will connect to most all Bluetooth keyboards and other devices so you have a wide range of options. For connectivity there is a USB-C port. My devices are all standard USB and so would not connect but a simple and inexpensive adapter fixed the issue. The USB-C was a great choice by Microsoft for this tablet because it is small and more mechanically rugged than a standard USB port. Also, it can handle more electrical current which means that externally powered USB hubs are no longer needed in most cases. Out of the box, the operating system is Windows 10s. This is a limited version of Windows 10 which only lets you install software from the Microsoft store. That is a deal breaker for me and many others but fortunately there is an easy, painless way to convert to full Windows 10 professional which involves just following some simple instructions from Microsoft. To sum, I think that the Surface Go is good value for money. I'm very pleased with it and would recommend.

Still the best & most versatile radio available
I own two of these radios, have for many years. In 35+ years as a licensed amateur, I've had the best high end rigs and I've had some not-so-nice rigs. I sold everything except the two FT-817nd rigs. They really are all that I need. While at home, One stays on HF while the other is on VHF & UHF. This allows me to monitor & talk on two bands simultaneously. I'm even thinking of adding a third. On HF at home, I use a good quality external 100w bandswitched amplifier if I need more power. Most of the time I don't need it though. Both radios have the optional 2.3k SSB filters installed. I also use a Timewave DSP-9+ for DSP. One of these radios has been with me everywhere over the years. From long (20+ mi.) wilderness hikes & mountain climbs to camping to a 7000+ mile cross-country road trip in 2012. Never once have these little wonders let me down, and I have made many, many contacts & good QSOs on all bands & modes. With the FT-817, I can listen to many other services besides amateur radio - VHF air traffic, FM broadcast, Shortwave, and even public service if I plug in a small receive converter (MFJ-313). And all in a box about the size of a thick paperback book. Some have complained about internal battery life. In my case, I bought & installed the Windcamp 2500mah LiPo batteries & associated charging doors on my 817s and have no problem with battery life. For long-range hikes I also carry one or two small external AA packs which have eight NiMh batteries each. For digital modes, I use simple transformer-isolated audio cables along with USB CAT cables. They work flawlessly. So to sum, what I have with my FT-817s is: All mode, all band amateur capability including HF/6m/2m/70cm in a station which performs very well and which I can use anywhere - at home, backpacking, camping, in motels, park tables, even pedestrian mobile. Despite the Elecraft KX-3, this radio is still in a class by itself.

Xiegu G90 HF 20W 0.5-30MHz SDR Amateur Radio Transceiver

    Great little radio, great price.
I bought this radio used on a whim, and I've quickly become a fan. I had heard of the G90 and done a bit of research but hadn't really decided to buy one. But I was looking for a small rig which could serve as base, mobile, and portable. And I found it in the G90. This cool little radio gives you a lot for the money. Due in part to its SDR architecture and 24-bit ADC, it has a fantastic receiver. I find it to be quiet & sensitive on most all bands. As with most SDR radios, it features brick-wall filtering and it works very well in crowded band conditions. I made several SSB contacts right out of the box, and all gave good transmit audio & signal strength reports. The built-in antenna tuner is fast, quiet, and from my experience very wide range. Maximum transmit power is 20 watts which is a good compromise between true QRP and the average 100w base transceiver. In terms of features, the Xiegu folks have included all of the important ones and then some. The display is small but very bright & readable and shows lots of useful information - RX signal strength, TX power, SWR, Mode, Input voltage, VFO status, etc. and in addition a nice, fast updating 48khz wide bandscope and waterfall. Build quality is excellent. The case is rugged, heavy, and dissipates heat well. Front panel controls are a bit small for some but they are well placed and easy enough to manipulate. Xiegu has been very responsive to user suggestions and has been generous with regular firmware updates. This is in contrast to the folks at Yaesu, whom have not updated the firmware for their FT-891 & FT-991A radios for more than 2 years despite numerous pleas from everyday users. The ARRL gave this radio a favorable review, and now I know why. Of course it will not be all things to all people, but in my case it certainly fills the bill and I can't find any major faults or show stoppers. Its a keeper :).
