A kingdom beneath your feet.
As a fan of obscure industrial narrow gauge railways, I have long been aware of the Chicago Tunnel Company/ This volume is comprehensive, thoroughly researched and well written/ An outgrowth of an earlier soft cover book, this version is the penultimate authority on the subject. Highly recommended.

Authentic history on every page.
As the first volume in a three volume set, it sets the tone for all the information to follow. Well researched with plenty of vintage photographs, there is something to delight any rail buff. Recommended.

Superlative history of a neglected subject.
The author has written other books about specific California narrow gauge railroads. This book could be rightly considered a logical culmination of a lifetime of research and writing about this topic. Encyclopedic, but not boring, he gives the topic the care and consideration it deserves! A fascinating and lavish book in presentation and publication. Highly recommended.
