Good Reason to Smile

Remastering, in this case, isn't just increasing the volume, but taking every instrument and sonically polishing them. While the results are a bit more shrill than on vinyl, there is the additional clarity. For years I'd always thought that the version of "Money" on Seasons of Light was definitive, but this version is as good, aided by said clarity. One wonders why the additional songs weren't included on the original album as, even with them, it clocks-out at barely over 40 minutes, Get it while you can.

Buy Moondance Instead

A collection of songs that he'd performed throughout the summer of 1968 with a band, only to have the producer cast them aside. It was recorded in a couple of days with seemingly indifferent professional jazz musicians. A couple of songs would have been classic, had the instrumentation been stripped-down. The flute, especially, is annoying. The would-be classic songs are "Madame George" and "Cyprus Avenue." The title song is okay, the rest is an endurance fest, especially "The Way Young Lovers Do," which has to be one of the worst songs that he ever wrote. The sound quality is good. Get it as cheaply as you can.

Label-Worthy

In the '70s, my friends and I craved Columbia albums that were manufactured in the '60s, on the 360-Sound red label. They were thicker and had superior sound quality. This album retains the original label and is entirely worthy of it. I compared "Lay Lady Lay" to my mint-condition original 45 and, aside from the fact that the single is in mono, the sound quality is equal. The album itself is one of Dylan's best love albums, superbly performed. A truly classic album, restored to it's proper greatness.
