Screen was faulty
Looked OK initially. However, once installed (and correctly installed) the screen would not work consistently and soon died altogether. Stayed black with regular white flashes. Seemed to be something amiss in the circuitry. Went and got a replacement form a real auto parts shop. Was able to use the camera from the installed on, with a replacement screen - all good.
Likely it would have been able to be replaced, but given the time and freight involved, easier to just go buy one.
