This lens really is sharp across the frame at all distances and apertures .The sharpness stays the same from f2.8 to about f16 - the depth of field just gets deeper . From f16 the sharpness is diminished ( but still better and more even across the frame than a zoom ) Focusing is easy thanks to the large aperture ,which gives a bright image and shallow depth of field when focussing (helping focus to be spot one once stopped down a bit). Auto - focus actually works suprisingly well ( probably helped by the large aperture ) even in macro mode ( Where the focus limiter comes into it's own - and the rotary action of the focus limiter means it's not accidently moved). The large aperture also helps produce dream like results when used in conjunction with the close/macro focus. The two step change to manual focus seems not to be a problem - flick the switch on the camera body , and a light pull backward on the focus ring ( which you will be holding next anyway ) . If anything the only thing disliked is that in manual focus the action of the focusing ring is a little bit too light! The deeply recessed front element means that under most circumstances the supplied lens hood does nothing - however it becomes more useful if using a filter. The lens seems more than happy with the small Sunpak DX8 ringflash mounted . ( And as the front filter ring of the lens seems to be plastic I leave the threaded aluminium adapter for the ringflash in place to minimise wear on the lens thread proper ). Tamron supply a small soft bag for this lens which is also a good place to stash the 'kit' or similar lens when this one is fitted to the camera. I really like this lens!Vollständige Rezension lesen
Right, not going to bore you with a long review telling you about the lack of edge distortion, chromatic aberration and centre sharpness! Suffice to say, everything you have already read on the many reviews on the internet is true! This is a brilliant portrait lens, superb mid-tele fast fixed lens (ideal for fast indoor sports like ice-hockey where a fast lens is essential) and the only macro lens you will ever need! If you are thinking about buying this lens or a different one....buy this one! End of review.........you either have one or are about to buy one!
I bought this after reading great reviews online, but my personal experience wasn't so great. It's a quality optic but my issues were (a) how far it extends when focusing (b) relatively slow and hit/miss auto-focus at all f/stop and (c) even with manual focus most pictures were never 100% as sharp as I had hoped - did get a few though but not enough to keep it I may have had a bad one so recommend you read as many reviews as you can before purchasing.
very clean optics

This lens seems to have everything that I wanted when replacing my old manual focus Tamron 90mm f2.5 lens. It gives true macro (1:1)and is very well designed for use. The manual focusing ring is not a sort of vestigial organ as it is on many other AF lenses. It is not a feature that is added on but designed in such a way that no one can or would ever actually want to use it. The lens even has a manual aperture ring (with a lock button). Because the Macro ratio is so high, the amount of travel in the focus is very great and so the lens is fitted with a limiter which can be set to only allow travel throughout the distance range (0.45 m - inf)or the macro range (below 0.45m), regardless of whether it is on MF or AF. The control to switch from MF to AF is unusual in that the focus ring moves bickwards and forwards on the barrel and a marker shows which mode it is in. It remains to be seen whether this attracts dust/dirt and whether after prolongued use it remains as positive as it is when new. The lens looks and feels very nice and so far after limited usage the results it has turned in seem to be as good as I was hoping for. Roll on my summer holidays when I hope that the dragonflies of France will take a severe photographic beating. BollinghorseVollständige Rezension lesen
