Heavy as expected, yet mobile. I am a wild life photographer with this I can sneak through the bushes to get closer to the object. Though heavy can use hand held for few minutes. The auto focus is not great in continuous mode as with my 800 prime.

WOW! What a lens. Sharp from corner to corner at all zoom lengths. This is a HEAVY pro level lens. Always use it on a strong tripod or with a monopod. You put the camera on the lens, not the other way around. Carry it by the lens and not the camera--it is heavy enough to bend the lens mount over time. Personally, it has overtaken my 70-200 F2.8 as my favorite lens.
The 200-400mm f4 VR is a beautiful lens. While I'm still in the early stages of discovery, I've used it for wildlife, close-ups (love it's close focusing distance), and isolating subjects away from backgrounds. Sharp sharp!

I love its fast AF, contrast and sharp images! I also the love the way it feels - all metal but not too heavy. You can still take sharp photos without using a tripod. This lens does not need a hood and you can even use your bult-in flash. I bought it because I like taking macros! But I can also use it for general purposes like street photography and sports. This lens is for keeps. It's very hard to find. It's kinda expensive but it's worth every penny.
This is my second 200-400. I bought the last one quite a few years ago when the VR 200-400 was first introduced. It is the best and most versatile lens I have and if you check out my web site www.rkwfineprints.com you will see that almost all the images were shot on the above lens. I have just finished testing the new lens on the same test chart that I have used for many years and the optics are easily as good as the old version - in fact slightly better with the 1.4 converter. I cant quantify the difference but I was impressed with the contrast on the VR2 something I dont remember from the old version. Thats it, a good buy.
