YOU: The Owner’s Manual is a good quick read – though it’s purpose is to help you improve your overall health through simple explanations of health concepts, it does a great job of providing a lesson in anatomy and sound health. Each chapter is dedicated different organ systems and parts of the body. Topics covered in detail include the cardiovascular system, brain, skeletal system, joints and muscles, lungs, the digestive system and sexual organs, the immune system, skin, and a separate section that discusses cancer. Think of this book as a primer on health. If you don’t enjoy most health books that espouse diets and feel like a step back to high school biology, you’ll appreciate this book. It is easy to read and its format reminds me of the ease of reading found in the Dummies book series. After the basics are covered, the book moves into a lifestyle action plan that acts as an easy to follow guide to improve your health. It explains adjustments that you can make to your lifestyle in order to live a longer and much healthier life. Simple tips explain how you can stay abreast of your health and avoid the see-saw of dieting and exercise. I’m not a big fan of the diagrams and sketches in the book – it appears as if they were designed to appeal to a broad audience, but for most of us, such silly diagrams are unnecessary. Assuming you can look past that, I highly recommend this book as candidate for a cover-to-cover read and as a reference guide for your bookshelf.Vollständige Rezension lesen
In an age where fad diets come and go faster than Hollywood celebrities change significant others, it is refreshing to find a book about taking care of YOU - as in helping your body live younger, healthier and maybe longer as a result. The authors of this book are doctors who were part of the team that treated President Clinton's recent heart condition. One of the authors also popularized the concept of calculating your "real" age (which, depending on lifestyle may be more or less than your calendar age). They're also Oprah favorites (they were guests on the show in May 2005, which is where I first discovered them). They wrote You as an "owner's manual" to help regular people better understand how what we eat and how we live impacts every single part of our lives. The book is written in very plain English (OK, it's a little corny at times) and has lots of practical tips on how to gauge our health (e.g., you'll learn what your poop should look like and why that's important). You'll also learn how to protect the health of your heart, reduce the number of wrinkles you'll amass in a lifetime, and how increasing your tomato intake can decrease your risk of cancer and decrease arterial aging (hint, just 10 tablespoons of tomato sauce is equal in nutritional value to 165 raw tomatoes!!). From diagrams to illustrate their points to silly jokes that drive their point home, the authors make it extremely interesting to read and easily digestible (hehe, an example of the humor you might find in this book). In a nutshell, this book provides useful information on what foods/beverages to put into your body, how much sleep to get and how to monitor yourself in order to live younger and healthier. It's really difficult to review this book objectively. On the one hand, the subject is very important; we need to know how to look after our bodies; and there isn't much competition. So buy it. On the other hand, the presentation is terrible. It could be made half the length, and twice as readable, by leaving out most of the childish jokes. The diagrams could be made more useful and informative by leaving out the jokey elves (and some of the diagrams consist of nothing else). 50% of the book is good information. The other 50% is the message "We're doctors! So we're smart. You're not! So you're stupid", conveyed by the assumption that everything has to be dumbed down, and repeated on every page. The authors make little attempt to distinguish between material that is universally accepted among qualified experts, and material that is controversial or open to question. For example, not every physician agrees that you should take 1000mg of vitamin C every day, or 162mg of aspirin every day if you're over 40. But these are presented as established facts, on a par with the advice to stop smoking or exercise regularly. We need a better book that covers the same basic material. Until one is published, make do with this one. If you're a physician, consider writing a better book. Millions of people want this information. Present it straight, and you'll blow "YOU: The Owner's Manual" out of the water.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This is a good book, skillfully written by intelligent authors with senses of humor. It is full of common sense techniques to improve your health with the long term in mind. The authors clearly describe how each part of your body works and then, once you understand how things are working, give you a few simple methods to improve the functioning of every part of your body from your lungs to your heart to your bones. Like any owners manual, this book is a better reference than a cover to cover read. Although the authors make it a fun read with comics and humor, it can become really dry really fast if you try to plow through the entire book in less than a week. Also, I found most of the strategies offered in the book were geared towards the aging generation and may not be as useful to younger readers looking to improve already good health or preventing future health problems. Overall, a good reference to keep in your home. You'll keep coming back to it over and over again and you'll find yourself healthier and happier as you apply the principles of the book.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I was looking for a simple, east to follow book that talks about how our bodies work with regard to how we take care of them. And, from watching Dr Oz on TV, he seems very easy to listen to and understand. Reading this book is wonderful. Just like on TV, Dr Oz (and also Dr Rozien, too) talk to us in very easy to understand language- no super difficult medical jargon is used at all. This book talks about all of the different body systems- how they function, what bad things can happen to them, and how to reverse the damage that has been done. I feel this book is actually better for a "weight loss" book than all the other fad diet books out there. I highly recommend this book to everybody
This is a great book written by the world renowned Dr.Oz, also known as Oprah's doctor. If you're looking for a health book that is not a text book this is a great book for you. The chapters are set up independently so that if you just want to brush up on one specific item you don't have to read through the entire book to understand what they are talking about. The authors have a way of bringing everything into a light that a 7 year old could understand. I originally checked the book out of a public library and decided I had to own it.
I loved this book, I found myself going from chapter to chapter with ease. I read things that I just had to go share with my husband right that minute. I found it interesting that the real focus is on your body age, not your calendar age. The print is a good size, it does not resemble a medical manual at all. The book does not sugar coat damage you are doing to your body or on how to fix it. One quote really hit home with me, "Most people know more about their Cell phone than they know about their own body." Is it true ? Think about it and then take the test in the book. The 50 question test might put some people off, but you do not have to take it. It was a big eye opener for me. I realized that most of what I thought I knew about the body was incorrect. If you don't want to take the test, please read the answers !! Very interesting, I promise you. The Book takes one part of the body at a time and explains them like parts of a house. The book tells you what diseases or conditions are common with that area, and what Western meds, Eastern remedies and natural herbs will strengthen or treat that area of the body. They are also very precise about dosage and what not to take. What led me to this purchase was that I saw Dr. OZ on Oprah, discussing this book. He showed what is really in our food, this was not the usual 5lbs of fat vaccum sealed, this was partially hydrogenated oil, high fructose syrup. etc. GROSS ! I was so horrified at what I saw & heard. I went that evening and bought this book. I NEVER purchase hardback books at full price. In this case, I did!! I do not regret one penny of it !! I found this book to be an easy to read book. If you ever wanted to think like a Doctor and not go to medical school and not deal with those $10.00 words, then this is the book for you. My father went to medical school and always told me to drink plenty of water when I was sick, he could never explained why. This book explains it in simple details how water washes infection out of you infected body so your body has less infection to attack. So simple. I found it to be so full of common every day knowledge, I bought several more and I'm giving them away for presents. I don't read many books, but I read (You,the doctors manual.) in 5 days. Now, I'm reading it a second time. I can't put it down. We all need to know how food, exercise, infection and every day things affect us. Doctors know, why not think like a doctor without going to medical school. Just an excellent book.The best knowledge book I've ever read in my life. No more needs to be said. I like the way the book is written. There are few medical terms, but they are explained. Even the explanations have explanations. There is also a fair amount of repetition through out the book. The illustrations help the non-medical reader to further understand the author's dialogue. The reason that I bought this book is to help my family to learn to take care of them selves and to understand more about the human body.
This is an excellent book about your body and your health. In it you will find a readable, down to earth description of body parts along with 'what to do' and 'how to' make choices in your life that will help you live longer. The illustrations are understandable and the text is often times amusing (I love the sense of humor). The authors are knowledgeable, credible, well known physicians. I recommend this book highly.
