SynopsisA Land Remembered has been ranked #1 Best Florida Book eight times in annual polls conducted by Florida Monthly Magazine. In this best-selling novel, Patrick Smith tells the story of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family who battle the hardships of the frontier to rise from a dirt-poor Cracker life to the wealth and standing of real estate tycoons. The story opens in 1858, when Tobias MacIvey arrives in the Florida wilderness to start a new life with his wife and infant son, and ends two generations later in 1968 with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that the land has been exploited far beyond human need. The sweeping story that emerges is a rich, rugged Florida history featuring a memorable cast of crusty, indomitable Crackers battling wild animals, rustlers, Confederate deserters, mosquitoes, starvation, hurricanes, and freezes to carve a kingdom out of the swamp. But their most formidable adversary turns out to be greed, including finally their own. Love and tenderness are here too: the hopes and passions of each new generation, friendships with the persecuted blacks and Indians, and respect for the land and its wildlife. A Land Remembered was winner of the Florida Historical Society's Tebeau Prize as the Most Outstanding Florida Historical Novel. Now in its 14th hardcover printing, it has been in print since 1984 and is also available in trade paperback.

  • How Florida was settled and developed

Best history book to learn how Florida was settled, developed, and got to 20 th century Even though the family the author uses to tie all the events together are fictional, the events, dates, and cultural life is all true.

  • A Land Remembered

If you love Florida history this is the book to read. It is Historical Fiction but it parallels the beginning of South Florida. If you are familiar with a lot of the old small town Florida, you will recognize the locations. This is a story of the MacIvey family, through three generations, from dirt poor Crackers to wealthy Real Estate tycoons.

  • A classic “Old Florida” novel

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in history and loves a compelling story of family struggles and unexpected friendship in an earlier time and place. It had been on my “must read” list for a while and I’m so glad I finally made time to read it!

  • Great historical fiction of Florida

One of the best books I have read in a long time. Great historical fiction of Florida with lots of true facts. Easy read. I did dementia care for awhile and read to my one little lady. She loved it so much I had to read it to her again: maybe she forgot what I read! Lol. But she sure enjoyed while I read it to her both times.

  • Compelling Florida Historical Fiction

I was born and raised in Florida. A Land Remembered tells a story about life and the times of true pioneers that I’d never really understood. I lived in Orlando from 1949 to 1970, so I knew the Old Florida when orange groves and agriculture were the mainstays of the economy. But to go back to the days when most was forest and pioneers scrapped for meat and food while clearing enough land to build meager housing was fascinating! The story writer is phenomenal! It is a must read!

  • Real Florida, the way it was!

‘A land Remembered’ Is one of the finest historical novels written. It opens one’s eyes to the true fellowship of mankind with no racial discrimination! It provides insight to the development of Florida during and after the civil war. I have owned, read and shared previous copies of this book!

  • Interesting book about Florida history

Very easy read - and quite interesting. Learned so much about Florida settlers and how they survived. I understand why this book won so many awards. Bought an extra copy for lending (or giving) away.
