Great Book on Civil War History
I was not sure if I was going to like the writing style of Mr. Shelby Foote or if this book was going to be another thick and boring book but I have found this book and the way it's written to be very compelling. It's a thick book and does not lend to pictures and very many maps and filling drawings. Mr. Foote writes as he is telling you "down-to-earth" knowledge of the events of the time period centered around Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, and the lead-in to the beginning of the Civil War. If you have an intertest in the Civil War and not interested in a quick read, you will enjoy this book. I was not sure if I was going to like the writing style of Mr. Shelby Foote or if this book was going to be another thick and boring book but I have found this book and the way it's written to be very compelling. A detailed look into Confederate sausage from the view of the butcher.
It provides minute details of topics that are just skimmed in other publications. Foote digs deep into the subject matter and reveals information that takes years to uncover from multiple interviews and research.

One of the best book series on the subject. Very interesting and thorough. It has words and phrases of the period but I like to learn as I read.... (that's the point I would think). Happy reading.

The Civil War: a Narrative Shelby Foote
From the outset I must confess that as of yet I have not read the entire three volume series. I fully intend to do so. My original purpose was to gain a more detailed knowledge of the engagement at Gettysburg prior to a visit there. Consequently, I started in the middle of his series, and fully acknowledge that doing so has some shortcomings. My choosing Foote to guide my understanding simply stems from my finding him to be the most credible authority in the Burns Civil War documentary. His writings do not suffer from the rewriting of history nearly as much as those of our current crop of revisionists whose aims are to bend history to comply with their own current politically correct agendas. Further, he had the advantage of having interviewed those who in their younger years listened to ... From the outset I must confess that as of yet I have not read the entire three volume series.
