    The Forgotten is Remembered

    While I was too young to go to Russia in 1941, some of those in my life did. Those who returned told me about it. Sajer's account fits neatly with what I was told. I read it eagerly years ago and re-read it now. It deserves all its awards and more. Cannot help thinking about the US veterans of Viet Nam that took similar abuse as did the Wehrmacht survivors. I am very thankful to have bought this fine book to replace my original that was destroyed years ago.

    Inescapable Terror

    A non-fiction horror story from the pen of the man who experienced it. It will take you from the bright and happy days of camaraderie and the youthful bluster of training camp to the most horrific and unpredictable terrors a man can experience. A never-ceasing dread and state of constant shock and appalling fright befalls him, and it is entirely impossible for his story not to drag you along with him. This is truly a one-of-a-kind work, as many autobiographies were written by officers who saw little action or by soldiers farther from the front lines. This was a common soldier starved, frozen, and subjected to unimaginable and inescapable sights and emotions. This book is out-of-print, and copies elsewhere are selling for ridiculous prices.     Down to earth reality ..

    An excellent book of a German soldiers coming of age in WW2, the descriptions of battles and the aftermath are very compelling and take away what is thought to be the glamor of war and expose it in its brutal reality, an excellent book and well worth reading .. Highly recommended ......................

    The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer is an excellent read. Interesting, informative and as compelling as any other I have ever read. I highly recommend it.
