Synopsis
In many ways C. S. Lewis predicted the future. "He foresaw the rise of trends we're currently experiencing: ethical emotivism, the sometimes unquestioned authority of science, and the increasing use of technology by states to control their populations." -The Gospel Coalition, Joseph A. Kohm Jr. The Abolition of Man discusses why we shouldn't always listen to only reason and cut out our emotions. Lewis argues that reason without emotion there is not a reality. He debunks arguments that the purist form of reason is instinct, that benevolent actions will be found through pursuing science, and that science will be the best moral compass for mankind to follow. Lewis proves that moral absolutes do exist and they are universal throughout all of time. This is a book for C. S. Lewis fans and anyone who wants to better understand traditional moral virtues and how they impact your life. Lewis said, "If nothing is self-evident then nothing can be proved." There must be self-evident truths that can be applied everywhere. The book brings together a series of lectures on education that Lewis delivered over three nights at the University of Durham., In the classic The Abolition of Man , C.S. Lewis, the most important Christian writer of the 20th century, sets out to persuade his audience of the importance and relevance of universal values such as courage and honor in contemporary society. Both astonishing and prophetic, The Abolition of Man is one of the most debated of Lewis's extraordinary works. National Review chose it as number seven on their "100 Best Nonfiction Books of the Twentieth Century.",  In the classic The Abolition of Man, C.S. Both astonishing and prophetic, this is one of the most debated of Lewis's extraordinary books. In this graceful work, C.S. Lewis reflects on society and nature and the challenges of how best to educate our children. He argues that, as a society, we need to underpin reading and writing with lessons in morality -- in the process both educating the next generation while re-educating ourselves.Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was born in Belfast. He was a fellow and tutor in English Literature at Magdalen College, Oxford, and was later Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, where he remained until his death. His major contributions in literary criticism, children's literature, fantasy literature, and popular theology brought him international renown and acclaim. Lewis's most distinguished and popular accomplishments include The Chronicles of Narnia, Out of the Silent Planet, The Four Loves, The Screwtape Letters, and Mere Christianity."If someone were to come to me and say that, with the exception of the Bible, everyone on earth was going to be required to read one and the same book, and then ask what it should be, I would with no hesitation say The Abolition of Man. It is the most perfectly reasoned defense of Natural Law (Morality) I have ever seen, or believe to exist. If any book is able to save us from future excesses of folly and evil, it is this book" - Walter Hooper

  • Meaty and thought provoking

C.S. Lewis is definitely one to read. He was and is a blessing to anyone who makes themselves available to his writings. The Abolition of Man is a short book (about 90 pages), but it is packed with intelligent and perceptive insights into humanism and it's trajectory. Although written many years ago, he accurately predicts much of the intellectual confusion which we see today in our world. Unless you have studied or at least read some classics, you may find yourself googling statements which he quotes, but even if you do not you will get a lot of perspective from this little book. Hillsdale College has a class on C.S.L. which starts by focusing on this book, and it is a good thing.

  • Great Find

C.S. Lewis is brilliant and is extremely relevant in these confusing, conflicted times that we are living in. I would recommend this read to anyone who has a serious interest in how life should be lived. By the way, the book was in extremely great physical condition, as well, which makes reading it a joy; like new!

  • By an intellectual for intellectuals.

I liked the book. CS Lewis was very much an intellectual and very philosophic. The book is full of deep thoughts and is, at times, a slow read. So if you're not up to it, the book can make your brain hurt.
