Product Information

DAS BOOT is widely considered to be director Wolfgang Petersen's best film, but this mini-series edit presented as a feature length movie, is perhaps even more stunningly realistic in its portrayal of the cramped conditions aboard a German submarine.<BR>Based on a novel by Lothar G. Buchheim, it is a striking example of an intelligent antiwar film clothed in the guise of a military thriller. In the midst of World War II, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and fire at Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of nautical warfare. Meanwhile, the crew's captain (Jurgen Prochnow) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon livened up beyond the crew's expectations when their boat's surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Battered by depth charges, the crew must pull together to survive the attacks of their unseen enemy.

    Exactly as described. Supposedly ‘Used, very good’; the only thing I’d notice that’s different from ‘Straight from the factory’ is the lack of a clear plastic wrapper. The discs, disc boxes and accompanying booklet appear completely perfect - no apparent ‘wear and tear’ at all. The boxed set arrived well packed. As for delivery…ordered at lunchtime on Wednesday, arrived next day’s postal delivery. Eat your heart out, Amazon!! A fantastic piece of history. Flawless service. Thank you.

    THE superlative submarine/U-boat drama, unmissable, TV series best & never bettered.5🌟

    Absolute classic German TV series, a must see. I already have this but had get one for my brother who loves it too (as did my father), since 1st broadcast 1980s, theme music still remembered: we watched this genuinely claustrophobic life on & below the waves with the terror, anticipation, bated breath, of the superbly acted sympathetic characters & still do! This is THE superlative submariner drama; regardless of nationality protagonists & theme - ALL Sub/U-BOATS crews shared same conditions, dramas through both Wars but this WWII. Impossible not to engage emotionally with the characters regardless of (Hitler's) regime, these are humans in hostile situations. I dare you not to be affected by this from start to finish.Get the TV series not the shorter Movie version. 5🌟 everytime.

    A great title, a great film.

    The version I purchased had both German and English audio. Obviously the lip sync is out if you listen in English, but that does not detract from the film. It also has many subtitle options. This version is the full 4 hours and 42 minutes long, so be prepared before you start watching. It is a riveting film from the start and will hold you until the end. If you are thinking about buying this dvd, then stop thinking and buy it. You will really like it.

    It is a absolutely fantastic film,the only film that really portrayed believable characters. For some unknown reason I had sympathy with them considering my father was in the Royal Navy trying to sink them. A great film get the uncut version not the directors cut. Ben

    Best submarine movie ever made

    The movie is very well made war movie about german submarine U-96 which served in the second world war. It is said to be the greatest war movie ever made. Movies script and acting is very well done as is the special effects. I suggest you to watch the movie if you are interested in anykind of submarine or war movie.
