What if WE were the alien invaders?
A typically opulent Charles Schneer production, FIRST MEN IN THE MOON is the fantastical tale of a trio of intrepid Victorians who reach the moon (and claim it for the British empire). There they discover a sub-surface civilization of insect creatures who are naturally cautiously curious about these visitors. That's about all there is of the plot. As with every Schneer/Harryhausen film spectacle trumps story and this film does not disappoint in that regard. Harryhausen loves vast differences in scale as seen by long shots of tiny humans against gigantic sets and huge monsters. The killer caterpillar with the snapping mandibles is as fine a creature as Harryhausen ever designed. The lighting of the interior caves, tunnels and galleries leans into spooky purples and greens, effectively. Laurie Johnson's score was excellent, a fine substitute for Schneer's usual composer Bernard Herrmann. Some reviewers carped about Lionel Jefferies' acting but I liked his over-the-top goofiness; he was the most lively person in the movie. Of course the visual effects were created nearly 60 years ago. They definitely show their age. (And in one clumsy instance the wires and pulley holding up a supposedly "anti-gravity" chair are plainly visible.) But a certain suspension of belief is necessary to enjoy any fantasy film and this one, if you are willing to go along for the ride, will pay some handsome dividends.

Great movie.reminded me of the old classic illustrated comic book.
If you like science fiction you will like this movie. Very entertaining.

Looked for this one for years
I like the plot. Story was written by H.G. Wells. Many have become movies. In this one.. Cavorite solution reversed gravity. Some ideas from movies, sparked minds to come up with new ideas for our space programs. I love this one. I appreciate the mind and writings of H.G. Wells greatly. Now I’m looking for War of the World’s. Another great writing.

This is The Real Deal!
Back in the mid-1960s, a young child crawled out of bed late one night and wandered out to the living room to see what movie his mother was watching. It was about the first men to travel to the moon, and I was completely fascinated. Although it was rebroadcast several times over the years that followed, I don't recall ever seeing this film in its entirety. Since my mother recently passed, I've often thought about this movie and several others she let me stay up and watch. Earlier this year, I purchased a DVD of this title, billed with additional special features, from a major online retailer, only to find it was nothing more than the movie itself - with not even a main menu, let alone chapter selection. When you put the disc in the player, the movie started straight away, but when the movie was over, it started over right back at the beginning. The only way out was to hit the STOP button. It turned out that the supplier sent me a 2016 reissue. Whether it was a bare-bones release or defective, I returned it for a full refund. However, the item that that I purchased on eBay is the real deal - the 2002 edition (UPC 043396058453). The film is nicely remastered, and the handful of extras are well worth the price of admission - though I'm told that 'The Harryhausen Chronicles' can be found bundled with other titles.

First Men "in" the Moon; what does that mean, since we've always said "on" the moon?
This movie has always captivated me because of the characters and the content. It is worth a watch because it get you thinking about the possibilities of the future. Can we ever cut off gravity? Would it ever be possible?

First Men In The Moon DVD
Although this isn't my favorite Ray Harryhausen film the story is fun for it's day. The DVD picture looks great and only my blu-ray beats it in quality.
