Shelter Years Tracks
This anthology includes some tracks that didn't make it onto the original 3 vinyl releases and these bonus tracks are typical of the 2 cd set as a whole-- that is to say-- it's a mixed bag. My 4 star rating is an attempt to reflect the inconsistency. Blues standards alternate with compositions by Leon Russell and/or his compatriots plus a few somewhat oddball choices penned by the likes of John Fogerty and Steve Winwood. I'd say the first cd is the stronger of the two. I saw Freddie King in 1974 and it made quite an impression on my 17 year old psyche. Such power and soul. A lot of Blues fans prefer his earlier material, when he played a P90 equipped Les Paul, but I prefer the tones he wrenched and cajoled later on from the ES 355. His vibrato was incredible. Anyway, if you're a fan of his later sound and don't mind the fact that 1) the material is all not strictly Blues and 2) he was clearly more inspired by some of these tunes than others, it's a worthwhile purchase. What's good is very good and most of it is pretty darned good.
