In Michael Curtiz's swashbuckling spectacle about the infamous outlaw and his band of merry men who "robbed from the rich and gave to the poor," Robin Hood (Errol Flynn) fights nobly for justice against the evil Sir Guy of Gisbourne (Basil Rathbone) while striving to win the hand of the beautiful Maid Marian (Olivia de Havilland). Flynn joyously embraces the role widely considered the best of his bountiful array of swashbuckling legends. Delivering his lines and performing dashing acrobatics (he did most of his own stunts) with breezy élan, he darts across the intricate sets of THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD as if there are rocket boosters secreted in his tights. It was one of the earliest films to use three-color Technicolor and, at the time, the most expensive film Warner Bros. had produced. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's outstanding score won an Oscar, as did the art direction and the editing.

The Best Robin Hood
I'm weird. I actually liked Kevin Costner's Robin Hood. I guess it's because I grew up with it, so it's "my" Robin Hood? (Well, in addition to the Disney one, anyway.) Oh well. But as much as I like it, I have to confess to also enjoying this 1938 masterpiece of swashbuckling excitement slightly more. Errol Flynn is thoroughly engaging as the reckless, forever optimistic and charismatic hero Robin Hood, a Saxon in a time when Saxons aren't terribly well-liked by their Norman neighbors, least of all the greedy Prince John, ruling in England while his brother, Richard, is a prisoner in Austria. Under the pretense of raising ransom money to free his brother, John and a gaggle of Norman noblemen who've aligned with him to tax the Saxons into poverty. Only Robin Hood has the guts to stand up to the upstart pretender to the throne and save the people of England, Saxon and Norman alike, from John's evil greed. This movie is full of adventure, romance with a beautiful woman (Norman lady Maid Marian) and some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen, particularly Robin's staff fight with Little John on a log spanning a river, and his later swordfight with Prince John's chief enforcer, the sinister Sir Guy of Gisbourne. This DVD is an amazing two-disc affair featuring an audio commentary by film historian Rudy Behlmer, an isolated musical score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and several fascinating and in-depth documentaries about the film.

Title gives a preview of the movie plot.
One of the Best movies ever!! Characters very well cast, really bring the story to life. Plot well developed, scenery perfect for the story. Color outstanding. Second disc has interesting historical information about producing the Robin Hood movie, plus the invention of technicolor. This movie will be enjoyed many times.

A Treasure in a Cardboard Case!
There have been umpteen attempts to film the legend of Robin Hood, and every one of them stands or fails in its comparison with this, the archetype, the paradigm by which they cannot help but be measured. To employ the word "classic" in speaking of this film is tantamount to "damning with faint praise" - "archetype" comes closer, but even that falls short. This is a shining example of the pinnacle of the filmmaker's art, one in which every stellar ingredient blends so perfectly with every other ingredient that trying to list them all and describe their individual qualities would be a daunting task indeed, but I will choose just three that especially stayed with me : - The characterizations. Flynn, DeHavilland, Rathbome, Rains, on and on... each participant, even the extras, ... And just between you and me, one look and smile from Olivia DeHavilland and I would dissolve to a puddle of goo on the floor... - The music. Erich Wolfgang Korngold once again proves himself a master composer; one could listen to the music without seeing the film and almost visualize the action taking place. - TECHNICOLOR! Even after over 80 years, the film retains the brilliant palette that is itself a classic example of fimmaking artistry and every bit a part of the story. Now. As to this particular product. A 2-disc set absolutely LOADED with added goodies, from an absorbing documentary about the history of Technicolor to not one, not two, but THREE classic Warner Bros. Cartoons (including one that includes a short clip from the featured film and another with Daffy Duck's hapless and hilarious "Yoicks - and away! >splat<" sequence). For the price I paid (none of your business, but it was a steal), I would have been happy with a simple good-quality copy of the feature film. This was a gold mine. With lots of gold still in it.

Here's an Action-Adventure plus Romance film done over 50 years ago when our Standards were Much Higher than we have Today. Children & Adults will Love this movie and one which you'll enjoy seeing Over & Over! In Color with a good mix of humor with an enjoyable music score in this history of Robin Hood which, in this edition features Famous & Well known actors of their time which if you haven't seen them in this movie, have yet to appreciate something Very Well Done and a True Classic. If you don't OWN it yet, you'll be Glad when you do -- you'll get a Big Bang for your Buck$ for this KEEPER !!
