These two films show Jimmy Durante's range in roles spanning from goofy comedy to serious drama. In THE GREAT RUPERT, Durante and his family of acrobats are aided in collecting a fortune by a friendly, bushy-tailed squirrel named Rupert. This feature won an academy award for animation. The second film in the duo, JOE PALOOKA, describes a rags-to-riches boxing story that was an early model for the 1970s/1980s ROCKY movies. Knobby Walsh finds a powerful (and loveable) Joe Palooka living in obscurity on a sleepy country farm. Though he needs polishing, Joe's got the goods. Walsh decides to transform the country bumpkin into a world champion boxer.

My Review of the Great Rupert and Palooka
I liked the Great Rupert but didn't care for Palooka. The Great Rupert was both very funny and clever. I especially liked Jimmy Durante and the other actors in that movie. Although it is old, I think it is a great movie for the whole family. In Palooka Jimmy Durante was very loud, crash and exhibited very little class.
