• KRAUSS ALISON & UNION STATION - Live

Given Alison Krauss' tremendous popularity and her status as the first female bluegrass singer to cross over into genuine pop marketability, and given the fact that her guitarist, Dan Tyminski, is the voice behind "Man of Constant Sorrow" (or at least the version that served as an idée fixe in the blockbuster movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?).

  • Rounder Select - Live: Mardi Gras in Montreux

Not at the same level as their debut (My Feet Can't Fail Me Now), the second outing by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band (taken from a couple sets performed at the 1985 Montreux Jazz Festival), Live: Mardi Gras in Montreux is overly loose in spots and has some lightweight material that was better heard live than on record.

  • ELY JOE - Live @ Antone's

Live at Antone's is Joe Ely's third release mixing his rock, country, folk, and Tex-Mex-fueled live show for an appreciative Texas audience. Pedal steel guitarist Lloyd Maines and the accordion of Joel Guzman add extra spice to this already high-energy performance.

  • Crowe J.D.& The New South - Live in Japan

J.D. Crowe & the New South were perhaps the finest purveyors of bluegrass in the '70s, and this live recording from 1979 documents all their glory. Lead vocalist Keith Whitley is in fine form throughout, but the band really shakes the rafters when J.D. Crowe lets loose with his lightning banjo work.

  • Rounder Select - Ultimate Collection: Live at the Ryman

His signature three-fingered banjo style would go on to influence countless musicians in the years to come, cementing him as a legend in his own right. While 2005's Essential Earl Scruggs remains the best entry point into this bluegrass icon's impressive canon of songs, it would be hard not to want to delve deeper into the man's history after an evening spent with him at the Ryman.

  • NIGHTHAWK ROBERT - Live on Maxwell Street

In 1964 with just Robert Whitehead on drums and Johnny Young on rhythm guitar in support, Nighthawk's slide playing (and single string soloing, for that matter) are nothing short of elegant and explosive.

  • Dean Ween - Paintin' the Town Brown: Ween Live '90-'98

Culled from some nine years worth of tapes, Paintin' the Town Brown: Ween Live '90-'98 comes close to approximating the full gonzo brilliance of a Ween live date -- granted, there's nothing quite like the experience of being there in the flesh, watching Deaner and Gener guzzling Jack Daniels while the Scotchgard-addled masses look on adoringly, but it's a fine substitute.

  • Ron Thomason - Live at the Newburyport Firehouse

It would be way too simple to call Dry Branch Fire Squad a bluegrass band. They play bluegrass, certainly, but they infuse it with mountain gospel harmonies and an intimate knowledge of Appalachian folk melodies until it would seem to be something else again, a sort of natural extension of the old-time string bands, not slick and showy like most contemporary bluegrass, but rustic and creaky and perfectly executed for believability rather than speed.
