You can't take the house out of Chris Brann, but you can take the jazz out of him anytime you want. Brann's more sensual, house-flavored Wamdue Project is pushed aside for P'Taah -- his skewed venture into free jazz and dizzy breakbeats -- and while its over-seriousness can feel like a librarian bore, its distinct relish in throwing in all sorts of apparently conflicting styles is pleasant enough.

On an unreleased version of "Flying High," vocalist Terence Downs chants in Portuguese over the house-meets-bossa rhythm. On "No One, No How," remixed by the Off World Ensemble with trap kit percussion by Genoa Mungin, vocals by Kebbi Williams and saxophones by Downs take the drum'n'house vibe and skate it down into deep samba territory, with cross-faded rhythms and in-the-cut drum loops.
Gloria Ann Taylor was a powerful R&B vocalist whose talent was significantly greater than her commercial success would indicate. But Whisenhunt preferred to release her material through his own independent labels rather than through established labels (despite brief alliances with Columbia and Mercury), which prevented them from finding the larger audience they deserved.

The former made a significant splash in London's Co-Op club, the place from which broken beat energy emanates, and the remainder of what makes up The Art of No State fits into the broken beat/nu-soul fabric, with references ranging from soul and fusion to deep house and couch-bound downbeat.

This exciting set by percussionist Babatunde Lea ranges from Afro-Cuban jazz to interplay by the three horn players that is reminiscent of Charles Mingus' bands. Pianist Hilton Ruiz, trumpeter Kahlil Shaheed, and trombonist Angela Wellman all have their spots, but tenor saxophonist Richard Howell takes honors among the sidemen, not just for his solos but for his vocalizing on a few numbers, particularly "The Creator Has a Master Plan" and "Nature Boy.".
Both Cowan and Holland find ways to bring live instrumentation into seamless, warm, and organic-sounding compositions that show off the best in electronica, how it can progress and develop musical trends as opposed to stifling them, as is sometimes wrongly perceived.
Fans bought in wholesale. While playing Sabbath tunes has become almost de rigueur for 21st century bands, no one has ever made them sound like this. They are big, noisy, ugly, and nasty. Add the multi-part percussion section and a fuzzed-out bass -- this may not be as elastic as the original but it's every bit as fuzzed-out and beefy -- and you have one of the "heaviest" party records of the last decade.
Though Fluid Ounce: Unmeasured has the Ubiquity stamp on it, the label is really acting more as a distributor for the vinyl-only U.K.-based Fluid Ounce, who originally issued the material. Arranged chronologically starting from 2000, Unmeasured compiles the first ten Fluid Ounce singles releases onto one CD.
The music on Living With. isn't anywhere near that slovenly -- in fact, it's quite meticulous; artfully arranged and layered with crisp, inventive production -- but it would be ideally suited to such a laid-back, lazily indulgent lifestyle.
The energy is, as ever, uniformly positive, albeit with a spirit that is more commonly playful, as on “Simple Advice” (loaded with so much kinetic percussion that it resembles a go-go band’s warm-up session), “Summer Love” (a lighthearted duet with Perkins over crawling, “Cutie Pie”-like machine funk), and “Room Punk!”.
