MJT 3 was a fine hard bop quintet based in Chicago and led by drummer Walter Perkins. The music on this CD went unreleased for 40 years until the Koch label got ahold of it. Comprised of seven selections and eight alternate takes ("No Man's Land" is heard three times while everything else is played twice), the music was certainly good enough to be released during the era.
The Koch Jazz reissue Arranged/Played/Composed by Jack Montrose was originally released on Atlantic in 1955. Tenor saxophonist Montrose was from the West Coast school of cool jazz, and was significantly influenced by classical music.

This early Don Pullen recording helped introduce him to jazz listeners. Pullen, a very rhythmic avant-gardist who can play inside or outside, was well-served by this release. ~ Scott Yanow. Don Pullen - Last Year's Lies and Tomorrow's Promises 5:36.
Bobby Short went five years without recording in the mid-'60s as the British Invasion swept all before it. For once, the purveyors of the Great American Songbook were absent: no Porter or Gershwin or Rodgers.

This Koch CD reissues an Atlantic LP, tenor saxophonist Von Freeman's debut on record. Freeman, who was almost 50 at the time, was obscure because he lived in Chicago rather than New York and because he had an unusual tone that took a bit to time to get used to.

Floating guitar and bass hand off to Previte's drum solo, free rock running into an R&B shuffle, with a grooving bridge during the title cut. Twangy and galloping introductory guitars by both Harris and Ducret develop into more driven organ-fired funk as "London Duty Free" shows a bundle of intensity and purpose, while an indirect ethnocentric core lurks under distinct African tom-tom beats in the process of "Bear Right at Burma.".
At the 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival, Woody Herman headed an all-star orchestra that served as the house band for the weekend in addition to performing its own sets. The lineup is quite remarkable, including Herman on clarinet or alto, both Al Porcino and Bill Chase on first trumpets, Conte Candoli and Ray Linn taking trumpet solos, trombonist Urbie Green, Victor Feldman on piano and vibes, guitarist Charlie Byrd, bassist Monty Budwig, drummer Mel Lewis, baritonist Med Flory, and the tenors of Zoot Sims, Don Lanphere, Bill Perkins, and Richie Kamuca.
For decades, Joe Mooney's only Atlantic LP, Joe Mooney's Songs, was out of print -- and if a collector was able to find a rare copy at a vinyl swap meet, he/she knew that the thing to do was grab it at once.
Trumpet : John Letman. The main fault to this set (an Atlantic album reissued in 1999 as a Koch CD) is simply that there is not enough of it. Trombonist Vic Dickenson, who receives top billing, is just on two of the six selections, for a total of 11 minutes.
Clare Fischer's big-band release was only briefly available as an Atlantic LP but it has finally reappeared in the CD era after a brief appearance under another title on LP some ten years after its first release.
While Jonny King's original influences were his mentor Mulgrew Miller and McCoy Tyner, he displays an increasingly individual voice on The Meltdown, both as a pianist and as a writer. The modal waltz "For Tomorrow" deserves to be covered by others, but several of the other pieces are also worth exploring by musicians looking to freshen up their repertoire.
Citing such inspiration as Captain Beefheart and Raymond Scott, saxophonist Johnston leads his band in an angular collection of tunes. The material is certainly not for all tastes, with frenetic lines running through the strange "Memory" and sharp left-turns on "Pipeline," but the music is uncompromising and inventive.
