W...orld War Z was released in theatres in June 2013 and was loosely based on the novel of the same name written by Max Brooks in 2006. The movie centers around ex United Nations trouble shooter Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) who is enlisted to investigate a zombie like pandemic that is sweeping the world. Pitt travels from Korea to Israel to Europe trying to find patient zero and a way to save humanity from the seemingly unending zombie hordes. Along the way we have great action scenes, zombie chases, plane crashes, and cities being overrun by the undead. The book on which the movie is based, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, was basically a narrated collection of survivor stories told by the people that fought in the war. The accounts were collected by a UN representative and spanned a decade from the first outbreak to the ongoing process of rebuilding society. The movie, however, starts with the outbreak and concludes with Brad Pitt and a silly ending that had nothing to do with the book. Ok, now for the good stuff. The acting was top notch and Brad Pitt, whose production company bought the rights to the book and produced this film, was quite good here. Excellent supporting cast as well. The action scenes were pretty good, especially when the cities were getting overrun, and some of the special effects were pretty impressive. However, the 'zombies', and I use that term loosely, were less than spectacular. Any fan of AMC's The Walking Dead knows what classic zombies look and act like, and World War Z didn't have them. These zombies are super human and can jump over cars, climb one hundred foot walls, and run down fleeing humans with ease. Brooks had classic zombies in his book, which was excellent, and I wish Pitt and his production company would have stuck with the original story material. Oh, and I won't even comment on that ending because I don't want to ruin it. But, wow, that was simply terrible. So to sum up. World War Z the movie was an average big budget zombie movie with good acting, decent action scenes, and the worst ending possible. It's worth seeing and maybe owning if it's cheap enough; the Blu-ray quality is awesome. However, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War was an excellent novel and a quick read so definitely pick that up.
The extras were entertaining but the 'director's cut' was disappointing as it included only a couple 'throwaway' scenes that weren't in the theatrical cut. The Blu-Ray was great quality
