I'm no expert but I wanted a machine that would give me at least a better picture than any of my three other VCR's were giving me. This machine makes my old home shot videos look better than I thought possible. I have begun saving them to digital with this machine and I could not be happier. The large dial on the side allows slow/fast motion and freeze frame or frame by frame advance with a very smooth and clear picture. I love it.

The AG-1980 is one of Panasonic's finest. As proprietor of a small A/V recording service, I have worked with many VCR's over the past 25 years and Pansonic has never disappointed me in regard to features, performance, quality, and durability. I own 2 of these units as well as AG-5700's, AG-5200, and AG-1810's, all of which continue to perform flawlessly in the studio and the field. I purchased this unit as a replacement for another brand which prematurely (and catastrophically) failed, reinforcing my positive feelings toward Panasonic. This particular unit is exceptionally versatile with its TBC, separate linear track audio input/output, advanced editing features, ability to switch from color/BW playback, intuitive controls, and easily viewed display indicating all functions. The jog shuttle allows access to flawless still and frame by frame motion which outperforms that of any other machine I've used including Panasonic's other units. Picture and audio quality rival my digital recorders. If I were to find any fault with this model it is only in the fact that it would have been nice to be able to call up function and status information on an on-screen display for viewing when I am not near the VCR, but this is a minor issue. Although I have done most of my work in digital format for years now, I still rely on my SVHS machines as back-up recorders in the field (always make more than one master) and for some studio work as these machines can still rival a standard definition DVD for image quality. Overall I highly recommend this unit in particular and Panasonic in general to anyone needing a great professional VCR/editor.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This VCR is a must-have for anyone wishing to get serious about archiving old VHS tapes to digital format. This machine provides excellent control over the picture output, and includes a built-in TBC to correct poorly made or worn-out recordings. The TBC can be turned on or off independently of the digital noise reduction, something that can't be done on any JVC unit. Handy, precise controls round out one of the greatest VCR's ever built.
Everything is great! I decided to bought this item because first of all I still love vhs. As a movie fan since I was a kid, I have a lot of vhs tapes (also beta tapes). And one thing for example that I always do is to not duplicate movies. If I got a VHS movie, I don't got the same movie in any other format. So, a long time I discovered that there was a great VHS VCR around called Panasonic AG-1980 S-VHS. I waited and waited and waited 'til I decided it was the right moment and I got it. The audio & video quality performance is amazing.
When working to spec these are some of the best VHS machines out there is terms of picture quality--a good choice for converting tapes to digital. At this point, unfortunately, they have a large number of surface mount capacitors that will have failed and need to be replaced. Symptoms include bad or no color, colored stripes in the picture and too dark picture. If you're planning to buy one of these make sure the capacitors have been replaced or you're asking for trouble.
