Regardless of the variety of technologies used in polymer processing they all require artificial radiation source and absorbing medium. Solar radiation, although still expanding field, has not been widely studied for the purposes of polymer processing. A multi-stage solar energy concentrating system has been developed and its feasibility as a radiation source for polymer joining, ageing and adhesive curing has been explored. Optical ray tracing, variable deterministic and 3D combined computer models of SEC facility have been created. The energy transfer, radiation absorption with heat generation and transfer in the irradiated polymer have been modeled. The experimental studies have demonstrated that transparent and colored, similar and dissimilar polymers can be successfully joined. Polymer ageing by ultra-accelerated exposure to concentrated sunlight and adhesive curing have been successfully performed. The research should be useful to educators or professionals in the solar energy, polymer processing and radiation curing fields.
