It is great to see Star Trek in HD for the first time. However, the joy of the clarity of these completely remastered episodes is tempered by both missing items and mis-fired good intentions. The HD transfer from the original film elements is impeccable except for some graininess, but that may have been in the original negative and SD transfers never showed it. These episodes include updated special effects that replaced the original (revolutionary for their day but dated now) effects sequences with computer generated versions. They have remained true to the originals, but added some pleasant surprises. They've also updated the soundtrack to include a 5.1 mix on the newly-recorded opening theme and on some of the audio effect within the episodes. This mix is much better than the faux-5.1 tried on the last release (which was just plain ham-handed) but still shows the difference between the mono-original and the new 5.1. The chapter settings include markers at each commercial break, including a chapter marker at the beginning of the credits, which is really nice since I like to listen to the credit music just for the music sometimes and many discs DON'T include chapter markers at the credits. On the positive side, this is a real good start to bringing Star Trek into the HD world. Now for the negatives, and there are quite a few. First, the package, while looking really cool, is breathtakingly poorly designed. As with the last issue of the complete series, one has to take apart a complex maze of pieces that leaves no less than 7 pieces lying around to get lost or broken. The multi-disc holder has no protective cover once its out of the packaging, meaning the top disc (which contains content on the top side) can easily be dirtied or scratched just from normal handling. Instead of having a cool package with a well-designed interior, it seems the Paramount TV folks said "ooh the Trekkies will love this!" and never thought of how irritatingly poorly designed and how long it takes to unwrap and rewrap the discs every time one wants to view the episodes. Second, the discs have a very long open involving a computer generated trip through the turbolift to the transporter room, after which a 10 second transporter sequence FINALLY brings up the menus. This sequence gets irritating on the second viewing, and clearly has the "ooh the Trekkies will LOVE this!!!!" attitude written all over it. I'm a die-hard Trekkie, but I WANT TO VIEW THE EPISODE not waste my time with stupid interstitials EVERY TIME THE EPISODE CHANGES. Also, the HD version has NO CHAPTER SELECTION, which means you can't go directly to the scene you want without starting the episode and stepping through the whole thing. The disc menu also DOESN'T show all three episodes on each disc, it only shows the first. It is only through experimenting I found that pressing the left-right buttons brings up the other episodes. Finally, they got rid of the unique music on episodes 1-6 and STILL haven't restored the original Desilu logo theme to the first 6, leaving me not only wanting, but actually irritated that they changed themes and logos from the original negatives. I want the HD with original themes and logos, but updated special effects and an easy-to-use physical and menu setup. Is it too much to ask? I'm a Trekkie, but I don't like being treated like an idiot, and that's the feeling I got from how the consumer interface was designed. The Great Bird would be sad.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Although I think it is really unique to see Star Trek presented with new graphics, cleaner prints, and restored musical compositions, I cannot help but think some may not like this version as well. When George Lucas redid Star Wars, many complained about the newer effects and changed musical scores (Especially on Jedi). This makes me wonder how the Hard core trekkies receive this edition. Is it better, the same, or a ruination of a great show. Although I am enjoying seeing this different version of this classic show, even some of the effects are not for me. At times the newer shots of the Enterprise look cartoonish, and not the model version we all grew accustomed to. The planets look better as do many of the alien spacecraft, but the enterprise just does not look right to me. Perhaps it is because I have seen this show too many times in my youth. Overall the product value is great, and the restoration of color and sound is good. But I will always have a problem with not seeing the original model of Enterprise flying through space.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This is one of the best dvd purchases of my life. star trek, season 1, has to be one of the best seasons of a show in the history of television! from the writing, production value, to the actors and directors and production staff, this show is amazing! this season is pure genius. and not gonna lie, I have a special attraction to Spock and Kirk. they, Sulu, Uhura and Scotty are my heroes!

What did I Love...The Content, the clarity is outstanding. The old reruns I've seen on TV can't compare. The Special Features were a pleasent surprise. What was just so so...The menu was trickier to navigate than the average DVD. What did I hate...The crazy, nightmare box they call a case...It looks as though it is composed of a brittle plastic, and stubbornly resisted opening. Once I got the case opened, I realized that the inner, hard plastic DVD storage folder did not protect the top/first disc from foreign object contact. I can only guess that this case was chosen on it's looks alone as it was certainly not based upon the protection of my precious discs, nor upon ease of use. The DVDs are great, but if you intend to actually watch them vice keeping sealed as collector items, do yourself a favor and put them into regular cases.Vollständige Rezension lesen
