Two RCA LC-1A MI-11411-A High-Fidelity Full Range 15” Coaxial Speakers
Dr. Harry F. Olson was one of the brilliant electrical/acoustical engineers who established many of the foundational essentials of acoustic design and sound recording/reproduction science. He not only had a Ph.D in electrical engineering, but a unique awareness and understanding of the psychology of music and the way humans perceive sound. In 1928 Dr. Olson joined the research and development division one of the world’s largest radio manufacturers of the day, RCA, and certainly had a lot to do with the company’s expansion and tremendous success in developing high-fidelity/broadcast/recording equipment. His list of accomplishments reads like a technological hall of fame and includes over 100 patents, which are considered fundamental to their respective industries, in microphone, speaker, motion picture, and audio electronic design.
In 1942 Dr. Harry Olson developed what has been called his crowing achievement, the RCA LC-1 Duo-Cone. This loudspeaker is a point source driver encompassing both the HF and LF built into the same plane for perfect phase relationship and aural harmony within the audio band. It was built for the critical application of broadcast monitoring and became the reference standard within the professional recording industry. The design pre-dates the famous Altec 604, Tannoy dual concentric, and Jensen Coax, and incorporates unique design elements that separates it from the pack, which in the opinion of many audiophiles today puts it in front of the pack
The RCA LC-1 was available from 1942 and into the 1970’s. There were 4 generations of this speaker; LC-1, LC-1A, LC-1B, & LC-1C. This auction if for the 2nd, and most desirable, generation the LC-1A, available new in the early 1950’s. The LC-1A was a re-design of the original by Harry Olson himself, adding the mid-cone acoustical-domes and HF deflector to improve dispersion and further refine its already amazing sonic fidelity.
The LC-1a is different from other coax designs in that it has a concentrically mounted direct-radiator HF unit as opposed to a horn type HF driver, which are all inherently out of phase with the LF section. The frequency relationship of both sections in the LC-1A are incredibly cohesive, natural, and time-correct, it truly excels in this aspect which is the most desirable trait of a point-source/coax speaker. In the proper enclosure the LC-1A presents music in wide-range, highly accurate and incredibly natural fashion. Music and voice are sharply imaged. Its midrange reproduction is magic. The system has a level of coherency, clarity, speed, naturalness and pure musical energy that is unmatched. Wide Bandwidth, Wide Dispersion
The LC-1a is a high compliance duo-cone speaker with a 25Hz-16kHz frequency response and a 120* dispersion angle/ As a result, it covers four times the area typical of other high quality coaxial speakers. The two coaxial cones are direct radiators with separate voice coils
Alnico V Magnets; Aluminum Voice Coils
The LC-1A uses a die-cast aluminum frame with Alnico V magnets. The two voice coils are wound of copper-class aluminum wire with improved high frequency efficiency. High temperature materials and extra clearance increase the speaker’s power handling capability and reduce distortion even in the crossover frequency region. The Coaxial relationship of the two cones minimizes out-of-phase components in the crossover frequency range. The shallow angle of the cone improves response smoothness.
Acoustical Domes
the acoustical domes are largely responsible for the smooth response of the LC-1A. The series of domes placed on the speakers large cone break up the unit’s symmetry and eliminates the interference normally characteristic of the symmetrical shape without sacrifice to either highs or lows.
Built-In Crossover
The crossover network utilizes the physical characteristics of the cones to mutually vibrate in unison the crossover frequency region and merely employs one capacitor in the high frequency unit to limit its current at low frequencies.

Speakers have been extremely well cared for and are in excellent condition. All HF & LF sections are working flawlessly. Cones are in excellent shape, with no damage. Paper fold surrounds are still pliable, no cracks or stress marks. Acoustical domes are fully intact. Cosmetically speakers are clean with no major blemishes or damage. There are some minor mounting marks from normal use.
