Karate, the martial art that started as a secret
Karate was born in Okinawa in the late 17th century. Japan's rulers had outlawed weapons and martial arts learning, so training was clandestine and bare hands became weapons. Te, meaning hand, was already a fighting style in Japan, later influenced by kenpo, introduced by Chinese settlers. Styles emerged from three cities, but eventually carried one name: Okinawa-te or tode. Two centuries later, Anko Itosu ended the mystery and started to teach te in the schools of Okinawa. His student, Funakoshi, modified te, and changed its name to karate, the art, practiced worldwide, that we know today.
