History of AnimalsUnderstanding evolution from microorganisms to mammals
Diversity and history in the animal kingdom
Animals are typically grouped into six groups including: invertebrate, amphibian, fish, reptile, bird, and mammal. In its simplest form, single-celled microorganisms known as invertebrates evolved first, which were then followed by fish, the first vertebrates. From there, amphibians were the first terrestrial creatures, followed by reptiles living on land and water. Mammals developed in the Jurassic period, while birds are believed to come from the Mesozoic Era more than 150 million years ago.
