Vintage WALCO BEAD CO. Craft Kits
Walco Bead Co. was one of the largest bead companies in the United States at the start of the 1900s. It was a landmark in New York's "bead alley" at 37 West 37th Street. Their primary marketing device was selling bead craft kits that included everything needed to create bead work. In 1935, Walco made the item that would make it the biggest selling bead supplier to children -- the "Official Boy Scout Beadcraft Outfit" No. 1144. Many other craft kits would round out the many kits that Walco would produce through the 1960s. In the late 1960's and 70's, the graphically illustrated boxed kits gave way to header carded bag kits sold in T.G.&Y. and Ben Franklin stores across the country.
